Composition

Injection- Each 100 mL of 0.45% sodium chloride USP contains 450 mg sodium chloride in water for injection.

Indications

This drug is indicated as fluid replacement after trauma and dehydration, in cystic fibrosis, swelling of sinus.

Side effects

Mild to moderate side effect has been observed such as hypernatraemia, tachycardia, and weakness.

Precautions

This drug is to be cautiously used in patients with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, preeclampsia, and pregnancy.

Contraindications

This drug is contraindicated in patients with gastrointestinal disorders.

Dosage and administration

For low levels of sodium- in adults usual dose of sodium 100- 150 ml of a solution containing 3% sodium chloride is to be given intravenously for 20 minutes. For cystic fibrosis- 10 ml of sodium chloride solution is inhaled twice a day by nebulizer. For swelling of the sinus- 150- 200 mL of a nasal spray containing 0.9% to 3% sodium chloride is to be given two to three times a day.
