Composition

A single-dose vial of cefotetan consists of sterile cefotetan disodium, equivalent to 2 grammes of cefotetan. The sodium constituent inside is 80 mg per gramme of cefotetan.

Indications

Usage of cefotetan is indicated in the treatment of skin structure-related infections, urinary tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, gynecological infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, intra-abdominal infections, bone and joint infections, and certain other infections.

Side effects

Mild to moderate infections have been observed. Side effects such as nausea, fever, mouth sores, chills, red or swollen gums, mild diarrhea, abnormal liver function tests, dark-colored urine, and stomach pain in some cases.

Precautions

Use of alcohol with this medication is not allowed as it might cause flushing, headaches, and sweating. To be prescribed cautiously in patients with liver disorders.

Contraindications

Cefotetan is contraindicated in patients with known allergies to the cephalosporin group of drugs or patients with a previous history of hypersensitivity.

Dosage and administration

The usual adult dosage consists of 1-2 grams of cefotetan for injection or intravenous route to be given every 12 hours.
