This is a fixed drug combination of Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim available as a double-strength (DS) tablet; it contains 800 mg of Sulfamethoxazole and 160 mg of Trimethoprim, and in tablet form, 400 mg of Sulfamethoxazole and 80 mg of Trimethoprim are administered orally.
Used in the treatment of infections of the urinary tract caused by susceptible strains of Enterobacter, E. coli, and Klebsiella species. other infections such as acute otitis media, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, shigellosis, and traveler’s diarrhea in adults.
Common side effects of its use include loss of appetite, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue. Severe side effects include bruising or unusual bleeding, severe skin rashes, and mouth sores.
To be cautiously used in patients with blood disorders. in the case of any hepatic disorders or kidney impairment or dysfunction. To be prescribed only after a thorough checkup. The dosage of medication is to be adjusted accordingly.
This drug is contraindicated in patients with a history of known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or with any history of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia from the use of trimethoprim. Its use is also contraindicated in patients with marked hepatic damage or renal insufficiencies.
Dosage and administration
Tablet Bactrim is available in two dosages: 400 mg and 80 mg of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, respectively. The DS form indicates double strength, which is 800 mg and 160 mg, respectively. Adults should take one Bactrim DS (double strength) tablet once a day or two Bactrim tablets every 12 hours orally after meals.
