Composition

Each capsule contains ampicillin trihydrate equivalents up to 250 mg or 500 mg as its constituents.

Indications

This penicillin antibiotic is used in the treatment of various infections such as urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections due to S. pneumoniae, Bacterial meningitis, septicemia, and endocarditis, and gastro-intestinal infections such as Shigellosis, typhoid fever, and infections due to other susceptible strains.

Side effects

Common side effects observed are nausea, vomiting, rash, diarrhea, and cramps. In some cases, diarrhea is accompanied by fever and blisters.

Precautions

Patients at risk of superinfections should be prescribed cautiously. Individuals with hepatic or renal impairment should be careful.

Contraindications

Patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to any of the penicillins.

Dosage and administration

One tablet of 250 mg is to be administered orally every 6 hours, to be taken post-meals. A 500 mg tablet should be taken orally every 6 hours. The duration of treatment depends on the type of infection.
